Sports betting players were treated to a classic at UFC 125, when Frankie Edgar overcame a tough start to fight Gray Maynard to a draw, retaining his lightweight title. The two will square off for the third time in three years at UFC 130 in Las Vegas, and while it should be another lengthy fight, you should take the champ to do just enough to come away with the title.

  • What: UFC Betting
  • When: Saturday, May 28th, 10:00 PM ET
  • Where: MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV
  • Pick: Frankie Edgar -145

Why Bet On Frankie Edgar (13-1-1)

The lightweight champion looked down and out against Maynard in the first round of their second fight as Maynard peppered him, but Edgar somehow made it out of the first, regained his senses and fought all the way back for a draw, showing that he could have the biggest heart in the UFC. No one gave him a chance in his first fight against B.J. Penn, but he came away with a win. No one gave him a chance in his second fight with Penn, and he completely dominated the legend to put any talk of a fluke to bed. Edgar’s strength, besides his heart, is that he’s one of the most versatile fighters in the game as he is a former Division-1 wrestler (he still coaches at Rutgers), he can hold his own when it comes to boxing, and he’s a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jistu, so he can submit you if it comes down to him. “The Answer” has phenomenal stamina as he has won eight fights via decision, and in the fights against Penn, he was easily the better conditioned athlete, although conditioning has never been Penn’s strong suit. He took a lot of punishment in the second fight with Maynard and looked strong as the fight wore on, so if you’re waiting for fatigue against Edgar, you’ll be waiting for a while.

If you had to point to a negative against Edgar, it’s that he doesn’t finish fights; as was mentioned above, eight of his 13 wins have come by decision, including four of five fights since he lost to Maynard in their first fight in April 2008. There is never a lack of excitement as Edgar has been awarded “Fight of the Night” four times, and his war with Tyson Griffin won the 2007 “Fight of the Year”. But he may need to reach down deep to knock out Maynard and end this thing.

Why Bet On Gray Maynard (10-0-1-1)

Maynard is kicking himself for not being able to finish Edgar in his first-round rout, and he punched himself out trying to end the fight, which allowed Edgar to get back into the tilt and earn the draw. Maynard showed improved stand-up in the second fight against Edgar, but his strength is in his wrestling; Maynard is a former All-American wrestler at Michigan State, where he was roommates with former light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, and true to his nickname (“The Bully”), Maynard can push his opponent all over the ring and control the fight, which has allowed him to win eight fights via decision. He showed this in his fight with Kenny Florian which earned him a shot at Edgar and his belt, and his game is very similar to welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in that he looks to impose his will on his opponent and he is excellent at using his leverage for control, which means he has a good shot at a UFC betting win in a few weeks’ time.

But much like Edgar (and GSP, on a larger scale), Maynard has problems finishing a fight and instead tries to rely on points. Only two of his 10 wins have come via knockout, and he’s never submitted an opponent. It’s not like Maynard can stand and trade with opponents, but it’s not his bread-and-butter and if he feels like he’s losing a fight, he’s going to take it straight to the mat where he feels he has an advantage.

How The Fight Will Play Out

UFC betting odds have Edgar as a -145 favorite in what should be the final fight between these two; Anthony Pettis was slated to get a shot at Edgar, but after Edgar-Maynard 2, you had to have a rematch. We’re expecting nothing less than another fierce battle between these two, and there isn’t much between as shown by Maynard’s odds, which are listed at +115. Maynard is going to try and use his wrestling once again, while Edgar would prefer to keep this standing up.

Where Edgar could shift the momentum is with his Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which he can use to counter Maynard’s wrestling, although Maynard is probably too strong to get submitted. In another close fight which will go the distance, take t the champion, Frankie Edgar, in your online betting picks.
