Online betting players will be treated to a matchup that could be as good as the main event of UFC 126 in Las Vegas on February 5th, as Forrest Griffin and Rich Franklin can put on a show as well as anyone in MMA, past or present. The two will lock horns in a light-heavyweight battle, and in what should be a lengthy battle, take the more-experienced fighter.

Forrest Griffin (17-6, three KOs)

UFC betting players will surely remember watching Griffin’s war with Stephen Bonnar in the finale of the first “Ultimate Fighter” back in April 2005, and he was slated for big things in the UFC. Sure enough, Griffin ended up winning the light-heavyweight title from Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in July 2008, but he didn’t hold it long, losing it in his first defense to Rashad Evans in December of that year. Next, Griffin was knocked out by Anderson Silva in the first round of their UFC 101 tilt in which he was clearly outmatched, but he gained a small measure of respect back by beaten Tito Ortiz in a rematch of their 2006 Fight of the Year. Still, Griffin needs a convincing win to stay afloat in an increasingly competitive 205-pound division, because the win over Ortiz was only a split decision. Many wondered how Griffin would recover from the humiliation he suffered at the hands of Silva (who had moved up in weight to take this fight, but had fought at 205 pounds a number of times before), but he did enough to win a tough fight against a veteran fighter.

Rich “Ace” Franklin (28-5-0-1, 15 KOs) (-190 to win)

Franklin has also suffered at the hands of Silva, in fact, two of his five career losses have come from Silva’s knees. Franklin lost the UFC middleweight title to Silva back in October 2006 after winning it from Evan Tanner in June 2005, and after the second loss to “The Spider”, Franklin decided to move up to 205 pounds, where it has been a mixed bag for the fighter who looks eerily like Jim Carrey from “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” (hence the “Ace” nickname). He has a couple of wins over the likes of the recently-retired Chuck Liddell (whose last loss was a brutal knockout from a Franklin right hand) as well as Wanderlei Silva, but he also has losses to Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort. One thing you can never say about Franklin, and the same thing holds true for his opponent, is that their fights are boring. Franklin is one of the most popular fighters in the history of the UFC, and a surefire Hall of Famer, because he is always on the attack and he’s not willing to sit back and take a draw. Win or lose, Franklin’s main goal to put on a show for the fans, and he can take a punch as well as anyone in the history of the UFC.

UFC 126 Betting And Prediction

Franklin comes in to this matchup as a -190 UFC betting favorite in what should be a very entertaining matchup featuring two veterans that have seen it all. Both are essentially freestyle fighters who have added to their arsenal as their career has gone on, and both are now above average in things like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and ground skils. Both fighters are also just as apt to knock you out as they are to pull out a decision, and they are both tricky when it comes to submissions. Franklin appears to be fully healed from a broken forearm suffered in the Liddell fight, so injury isn’t going to be an excuse for either fighter. As we said before, the 205-pound division is getting tougher and tougher, and both have had some inconsistent times as of late. This is a fight we can see going the distance, simply because both fighters are so tough to knock out, but as Liddell showed, the chin does get a bit softer as you get older. Because their styles really cancel out, and they’re tough as nails, it’s going to be a decision, and it’s all about who will be more active. We’re counting on Franklin to draw on his wealth of experience to pull out a close win over Griffin, so go with “Ace” in your sports betting book.

Jack’s Pick: Rich Franklin
