Jones Belfort Betting Tips – Jones Adds Another Former Champ To His 205-Pound Resume

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 9/16/2012 6:40:58 PM

Sports betting odds in the UFC are always leaning heavily towards Jon Jones, the light-heavyweight champion who is poised to lead the company into the next generation, even though he has butted heads with president Dana White. After a few bumps in the road, Jones will defend his title on Saturday in Toronto against former champ Vitor Belfort, and Jones’ well-rounded game and reach will be too much for the Brazilian.

What: UFC Betting
When: Saturday, September 22nd, 9:00 PM ET (main card starts)
Where: Air Canada Center, Toronto, ON
Pick: Jon Jones -740

Why Bet On Jon Jones

It has been a whirlwind for the 205-pound champ, as Jones (16-1) has arguably been the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet for the last year and a half, and most of his troubles have come outside of the octagon. Jones followed up a one-sided trouncing of former training partner Rashad Evans (who is the fourth straight former champion that Jones has beaten) with a high-profile DUI, and then he took most of the heat for the Dan Henderson/Chael Sonnen debacle. It seems like non-MMA issues are the only thing that can slow down Jones, as he doesn’t have many weaknesses inside the octagon. His 84.5-inch reach allows Jones to keep his opponent at bay, and if they do get close to him, Jones can hit you with some of the most vicious elbows and knees in the business, and he is also a top-notch wrestler. Jones has also never been taken down, but he also has a wicked submission game.

If there is one fighting weakness that Jones has, it may be his lack of one-punch power, but when you can do as many things as Jones can, that’s irrelevant. His biggest opponent is himself and avoiding being too cocky, which he is being accused of from all corners. Can Jones remain focused on the task at hand and not being a superstar? If he can, “Bones” will likely hold the 205-pound title until he moves to heavyweight, which the 25-year-old has alluded to many times.

Why Bet On Vitor Belfort

Belfort (21-9) is another former light-heavyweight champion in the UFC and he also won a heavyweight tournament at UFC 12 way back in 1997, so he is no slouch either. Belfort is 3-1 in his return to the UFC, which welcomed him back into the fold as a middleweight, but he has also fought twice at 190 and 197 pounds, so 205 pounds shouldn’t be an issue for the Brazilian, who is one of the most feared strikers in the game because of his explosiveness and when he swarms you, the match is usually going to end soon. He also reminded UFC betting players that he was a black belt in jiu-jitsu with a submission win at UFC 142, albeit against an overweight Anthony Johnson.

However, Belfort’s sole loss since returning to the UFC came courtesy of a highlight-reel front kick from 185-pound king Anderson Silva in February 2011, and many wondered about Belfort’s ability to bounce back mentally from such a devastating loss. “The Phenom” has never been known as a mentally strong character, and so far, he has responded with two huge wins via stoppage, but Jones is in a different class from the likes of Johnson and Yoshihiro Akiyama. Belfort has come up short in a number of big fights with losses to the likes of Randy Couture (twice, one at heavyweight and once at light heavyweight), Alistair Overeem, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz and Henderson, Jones’ original opponent until he tore his MCL. Can Belfort raise his game against a man he calls the best in the history of the UFC? We’ll see on Saturday in Toronto

How It Will Play Out

Jones emerges as a massive -740 UFC betting favorite in this matchup with Belfort, who is rated at +565 and it is a testament to Jones’ skills and accomplishments that he is such a huge favorite over one of the all-time legends of mixed martial arts. But Belfort knows he has nothing to lose and that can be dangerous for the champion.

Still, Jones showed he could stick to a gameplan against Lyoto Machida and ended up putting “The Dragon” to sleep with a standing guillotine. Belfort’s only hope is to rush Jones and catch him slipping, but Jones’ reach allows him to see that coming quickly and he can either hit Belfort with an elbow or take him to the mat, and if that happens, Belfort’s night will come to a screeching halt. Stick with the champ, Jon Jones, in your online betting picks.
