Online betting players are gearing up for a busy end to the year for the UFC, and on Saturday, the bantamweights (135 pounds) look to put on a show as Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles step into the octagon with a title shot on the line. In what should be an extremely technical fight, take Faber to use his wrestling and experience to earn the victory.

What: UFC Betting
When: Saturday, November 19th, 9:00 PM ET
Where: HP Pavilion, San Jose, CA
Pick: Urijah Faber -215

Why Bet On Urijah Faber (25-5)

Faber is looking to bounce back from his first loss in the UFC, a unanimous decision at the hands of champion Dominick Cruz back in July. The two are now tied at one win apiece, and Faber would love nothing more than a third crack at Cruz, but first he has to dispose of Bowles. He has looked relatively solid since moving down from featherweight after losing the WEC belt to current champion Jose Aldo and to be honest, Faber probably looked better in the loss to Cruz than he did in a win over Eddie Wineland in his UFC debut in March. He claimed that nerves got the better of him in the Wineland fight, and he looked much more relaxed against Cruz, pushing the champ, and it definitely wasn’t a blowout loss. Faber is a brown belt at Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has won 13 of his fights via submission, but he proved against Cruz that he could hold his own with a striker as Faber takes strange angles to confuse his opponent. Faber is also a very good wrestler and can take you down before you can blink.

“The California Kid” has plenty of experience and has been in a lot of big fights, so nerves shouldn’t be an issue this time. He has never lost two fights in a row and in fact, after his four previous losses to the Cruz loss, Faber has won via submission. He usually comes back with a vengeance and with another shot at Cruz in his sights, you’re going to see a motivated Faber on Saturday night in San Jose.

Why Bet On Brian Bowles (10-1)

Bowles has lost only once, and that was to Cruz in March 2010 when he lost the WEC bantamweight title, but he recovered with an excellent victory over Damacio Page in his UFC debut in March. It was his second fight against Page as the first was held in August 2008, and if you’re a fan of coincidence, you’ll love this: Bowles beat Page with a guillotine at 3:30 in the first round, which was the exact same time and method of victory from the first fight. Bowles wasn’t quite as explosive against Takeya Mizugaki in July (on the undercard of Faber-Cruz 2) and he broke his right hand sometime in the second round, but he did enough to eke out a unanimous decision to put himself in this position. While he doesn’t have Faber’s experience, Bowles is also a brown belt in jiu-jitsu and he may be physically stronger than Faber, which he will need to stuff Faber’s inevitable takedown attempts.

Some UFC betting players may not be as familiar with Bowles because of his lack of experience, but you can’t sell him short: six of his wins have come via submission and he is going to be Faber’s equal on the mat. He probably has more one-punch power than Faber, so that is something to watch for. The only sticking point that Faber has over Bowles is the experience factor; the Cruz loss was probably the biggest fight of his career and he lost via TKO, although that was due to another broken hand. This is a different level as it is right in the middle of a huge UFC pay-per-view, and Bowles will have to deal with the biggest spotlight of his career.

How It Will Play Out

UFC betting odds have Faber as a -215 favorite in this bantamweight contest, while Bowes comes in at a dangerous +185 and Faber was always going to get the nod because of his experience and the public is more familiar with him. But even he knows that Bowles isn’t going to be an easy fight and he would also love to face Cruz again and avenge the only loss of his career. A title shot is likely on the line for the winner, so there is a lot at stake here.

This is going to be a technically sound match with lots of scrambles and transitions, and it’s probably going to go the distance as we can’t see either getting caught by a submission. Bowles has the better one-punch power, but Faber can take a punch and keep on coming. The edge in wrestling goes to Faber, and that may be the difference in a very tight match. Take Urijah Faber by the slimmest of margins in your sports betting book.
