Sanchez Looks For Redemption Versus Pearson At UFC Fight Night

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 6/4/2014 11:45:20 PM

Diego Sanchez hasn’t been the same since beating Clay Guida back in June of 2009. That victory extended his win streak to four-straight, but since then he has really struggled with just three victories in his previous eight fights, including consecutive losses in his last two appearances. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Sanchez fell to Myles Jury via unanimous decision at the UFC 171 event, but that didn’t stop him from getting on the phone and demanding he be part of this Saturday’s event in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This weekend’s UFC Fight Night event will be the promotion’s first-ever trip to the state, and Sanchez will be the hometown favorite, but underdog on paper, as he clashes with Ross Pearson in a lightweight fight near the top of the card.

UFC Fight Night:Henderson vs. Khabilov

(24-7) Diego Sanchez vs. Ross Pearson (15-6)

Saturday June 7, 2014

Tingley Coliseum, Albuquerque, New Mexico

UFC Betting Odds: Pearson – 166

Pearson has trended in the opposite direction over his last three fights, knocking off both George Sotiropoulos and Ryan Couture before a no-contest against Melvin Guillard after an illegal knee ended that bout last October. Pearson also gets a fighter that was recently roughed up in Sanchez, and will look to capitalize on another great opportunity.

UFC Betting Preview: Diego Sanchez

Sanchez reportedly campaigned hard to get a chance to fight in his hometown, telling Joe Silva that he would fight any opponent at any weight just to compete in front of his family and friends. Now Sanchez gets the chance he wanted, and he will lay it all on the line for the chance to get his career back on track. The 32-year old has maintained that he knows what has kept him from performing at an elite level, and that he will be able to bounce back. Sanchez did go the full three rounds in an absolute brawl with Gilbert Melendez in the Fight of the Year for 2013 just last October, so it’s hard to completely look past him. That said, he is taking this fight on short rest, and he will be in tough if he comes out throwing early and wears his self out.

UFC Betting Preview: Ross Pearson

Pearson strung together back-to-back TKO wins over Sotiropoulos and Couture with his heavy hands, but his fight with Guillard didn’t last long after he was cut on the forehead by an illegal knee. The 28-year old pulled out of a rematch with Guillard after suffering a knee injury, and had plenty of time to prepare for this tilt after having more than six months between bouts. Pearson has shown his aggressiveness in recent fights, but some think he will be better off sticking to the outside and wearing down Sanchez with his quickness and accuracy. Pearson will certainly have his hands full in this fight, but there is a reason he is the favorite, and as long as he picks his spots he should have the advantage.

UFC Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

As important as this fight is to Sanchez, the setting could very well be a disadvantage if he comes out too aggressive and starts being reckless. There is n o doubt he will be fired up for this bout, but after consecutive losses to lesser fighters, it’s hard to imagine him improving dramatically enough to take down an opponent as talented as Pearson. The Sunderland striker is back at full strength and has had plenty of time to rest for this fight, and as long as he remains patient he should be able to come out on top.

UFC Betting Pick: Ross Pearson - 166
