UFC 128 Betting Picks – Favorites Aren’t Safe In Newark On Saturday

ufc 128 betting picks

Sports betting players will be waiting for the main event of UFC 128 in Newark, where Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will look to defend his light-heavyweight title against Jon “Bones” Jones, but there are plenty of other exciting bouts on the card, and you should be able to find some underdogs to pay off for you as well.

  • What: UFC betting
  • When: Saturday, March 19th, 10:00 PM ET
  • Where: Prudential Center, Newark, NJ

Raphael Assuncao vs. Erik Koch (Featherweight)

Koch (11-1) is a -170 favorite in this matchup of fighters who came over to the UFC when WEC was bought out, and both are known for their submission skills, although Assuncao (15-5) may have a slight edge in the stand-up because of his Muay Thai background. But Koch is no slouch in that department either, as he proved with his first-round destruction of Francisco Rivera. Look for these two to put on a good show for the fans in their UFC debut, and we’re going with the underdog in what should be a close fight.

Betting Edge: Raphael Assuncao +140

Ricardo Almeida vs. Mike Pyle (Welterweight)

Almeida (13-4) is another slight favorite at -170, and he bounced back from a loss at the hands of Matt Hughes to beat T.J. Grant by decision at UFC 124. Pyle (20-7-1) has won his last two fights as he tries to move up the welterweight ranks, and even though he is versed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he may not want to get into a BJJ contest with Almeida, a third-degree black belt who is embarrassed in the way he lost to Hughes. Pyle isn’t near Hughes’ level, and we think Almeida will be fired up for this UFC betting contest.

Betting Edge: Ricardo Almeida -170

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Gleison Tibau (Lightweight)

Tibau (21-7) comes in as a -160 favorite over Pellegrino (15-5), and both of these warriors will fight with an urgency as they’re coming off losses; Tibau lost a decision against Jim Miller, and Pellegrino fell the same way to George Sotiropoulos, but Pellegrino may earn some points for fighting on a torn ACL, which happened in the first round of that fight. He comes back from rehab looking to show he can still be a force in the 155-pound division, and this will be a cagey match between two BJJ black belts. In a match that should go the distance, we’re leaning towards the favorite.

Betting Edge: Gleison Tibau -160

Anthony Njokuani vs. Edson Barboza Jr. (Lightweight)

Barboza (7-0) is a major -270 favorite in this contest against Njokuani (13-4-0-1), an exciting fighter who won the “Knockout of the Night” three times in the WEC. This could be the biggest test of Barboza’s career, although his UFC career got off to a good start whenhe beat Mike Lullo with leg kicks at UFC 123. Barboza has some of the hardest leg kicks in the game and is a black belt in Muay Thai, so Njokuani will have to be careful and counter with his heavy hands. We don’t expect this to go the distance as there is too much power in this lightweight contest, but Barboza is highly touted and many expect him to challenge for the belt sooner than later.

Betting Edge: Edson Barboza Jr. -270

Costantinos Philippou vs. Nick Catone (Catchweight, 195 pounds)

Catone (8-2) enters this catchweight bout as a -240 favorite against Philippou (7-1-0-1), who was a contestant on the “Ultimate Fighter 11”, but lost to Joseph Henle in a fight to get into the house. This is his shot to make a name for himself in the UFC, and it’ll be interesting to see how the two handle the weight chance as Catone was looking to move down from middleweight to welterweight after some injuries, while Philippou started as a light heavyweight. Philippou has the chance to jump into the MMA ranks at either middleweight or light heavyweight, and we think he’ll take that chance in an upset over Catone.

Betting Edge: Costa Philippou +190

Luiz Cane Jr. vs. Eliot Marshall (Light Heavyweight)

Cane (10-3-0-1) is a -200 favorite in this tilt against Marshall (11-2), but Cane has lost his last two fights, both by first-round knockout and he could be fighting for his UFC contract. Marshall lost a split decision against Vladimir Matyushenko in his last UFC fight, but he’s won three in a row in lower promotions and is looking to find his way back. We’re not sure if Cane is really ready to move up the ranks at 205 pounds, while Marshall looked to be poised for big things and like Cane, is also fighting for a deal. We’re putting our online betting faith in Marshall in this matchup.

Betting Edge: Eliot Marshall +160
