Online betting players have seen a rash of injuries hit the UFC, but they still have the ability to put on good fights, and the main event for UFC 133 pits two former light-heavyweight champions together in a rematch as Rashad Evans takes on Tito Ortiz, who saved his career with his last fight. Ortiz probably won’t get the boot for losing to Evans, but “Suga” should be able to pull out a decision win to earn a title shot.

What: UFC Betting
When: Saturday, August 6th, 9:00 PM ET
Where: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA
Pick: Rashad Evans -450

Why Bet On Rashad Evans (15-1-1, five KOs)

Evans has been out of action since last May, when he took down rival Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and he was due to face then-champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, but he suffered a knee injury and the shot was handed to teammate Jon Jones, who destroyed Rua to take the belt, and beginning a rivalry with Evans, who left Jackson’s Submission Fighting camp, and now Jones will face Jackson. Obviously, Evans isn’t happy about how everything went down and will come out for this fight with a vengeance, especially given the history between the two. Evans is a very accomplished wrestler who has improved his stand-up game by leaps and bounds, and he is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but it’s his wrestling that Evans uses to fuel his UFC betting chances. He has been successful on 52% of his takedowns, and then he will ground-and-pound you into submission.
If Evans still has a weakness though, it’s definitely that his striking still isn’t where it needs to be. He wanted no parts of trading punches with Jackson or Thiago Silva, his previous opponent, instead preferring to use his wrestling to control the fight. You have to wonder if Evans is still feeling the effects of his knockout loss to Lyoto Machida in May 2009, which cost him his belt.

Why Bet On Tito Ortiz (16-8-1, eight KOs)

What is there left to say about Ortiz that hasn’t already been said? He had one foot out the door in the UFC with four losses and a draw in his last five fights, and president Dana White (who has had a stressful relationship with Ortiz, his manager before his job as the UFC frontman) said that a loss to Ryan Bader would be it for the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy”. However, Ortiz landed a short right to stun Bader before slipping on a guillotine for one of the biggest upsets in recent memory. Ortiz has seen and done it all, so his biggest attribute may be his nerves: Ortiz instead embraced the moment and showed why he was the guy to carry the UFC through their early days – long before mainstream popularity was achieved. Like Evans, Ortiz is a first-class wrestler, but he can throw strikes with the best of them, although it’s not the strongest part of his game. But never count Ortiz out, as those four losses he came into the Bader fight with were tough losses on three occasions, and in those last five fights, four of them were against fellow former light-heavyweight champions.

Ortiz just isn’t the fighter he once was, and many people think that the Bader win was a one-off. You also have to think about Ortiz taking this fight on short notice as Evans was supposed to fight Phil Davis, who became the latest to fall victim to the UFC injury jinx. While he didn’t suffer any damage against Bader on July 2nd, Ortiz is still an old 35 years old and taking on a formidable opponent in Evans.

How It Will Play Out

UFC betting odds have Evans as a massive -450 favorite in this rematch of former 205-pound champions, while Ortiz is rated at +325, but you have to remember that Ortiz had the upper hand in their July 2007 meeting and the fight was only ruled a draw because Ortiz was penalized a point for docking the fence. However, you also have to give Evans credit for hanging with Ortiz in what was the biggest fight of his career at the time.

However, Evans has improved a lot since that fight, while Ortiz is on his way out and while he is tough enough to allow this fight to go the distance, look for Evans to do what he normally does: control the fight with his wrestling, and he’ll be motivated to face either Jones or Jackson, his main rivals in the UFC. Take Rashad “Suga” Evans in your sports betting picks.
