UFC 136 Betting – Quick Picks For UFC 136

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 10/3/2011 6:53:07 PM

Online betting players are getting ready for UFC 136 in Dallas, which is headlined by the third fight between lightweight warriors Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar, who is out to not only keep his belt, but to avenge the only loss on his record. Here are some quick picks to give you a start before heading to your sportsbook.

What: UFC Betting
When: Saturday, October 8th, 7:00 PM ET
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, TX

Frankie Edgar -150 (13-1-1) vs. Gray Maynard (10-0-1, 1 NC) – Lightweight

Edgar is a -150 favorite to defend his lightweight belt in his third fight against Maynard, who is rated at +120 in what should be another classic between these two. Maynard should have won the second fight after rocking Edgar in the first round, but Edgar avoided a second loss to “The Bully” with a furious comeback and some even thought he won the fight. Edgar will overcome his size disadvantage to Maynard with a versatile game, but he has to avoid the big shots that Maynard can throw despite not being technically strong on his feet.

Betting Edge: Frankie Edgar

Jose Aldo (19-1) -300 vs. Kenny Florian (15-5) – Featherweight

Aldo is slated at -300 to retain his 145-pound belt against Florian, who is listed at +240 as he fights in his fourth weight class. He looked very good in beating Diego Nunes, and the weight cut didn’t seem to hurt Florian one bit, but he’ll have his hands full against Aldo, the most feared striker in the division. Aldo is coming off a war with Mark Hominick back in April, and he’ll be eager to get back into the octagon, while Florian has come up short in too many situations to be picked in this match.

Betting Edge: Jose Aldo

Chael Sonnen -280 (25-11-1) vs. Brian Stann (11-3) – Middleweight

Sonnen is favored at -280 according to UFC betting odds, while Stann enters at +220, but he’ll have the crowd on his side for two reasons: Sonnen isn’t a very likeable individual (although to his credit, he has been quiet before this match), and Stann is a former Marine (which is the reason Sonnen has been quiet). Sonnen has been off since losing to champion Anderson Silva last August, so it’ll be interesting to see if he is rusty. Stann has hopefully improved his takedown defense, because Sonnen will look to turn this into a wrestling exhibition.

Betting Edge: Chael Sonnen

Joe Lauzon (20-6) +240 vs. Melvin Guillard (29-8-2, 1 NC) – Lightweight

Guillard is a huge -300 favorite against Lauzon, who comes in at +240, and this is an interesting clash of styles. Lauzon is a submission specialist, while Guillard is incredibly explosive who may be the best striker in the 155-pound division. However, Guillard is prone to submissions (seven of his eight losses have come via submission) and Lauzon needs to string together a couple of wins to prove he still can be a factor in the division. Your upset special comes in this fight.

Betting Edge:  Joe Lauzon

Leonard Garcia (15-7-1) vs. Nam Phan (16-9) – Featherweight

It’s tough to figure out who should be favored in this contest, as Garcia has lost two of his last three fights, while Phan has dropped four of his last five tilts. Both probably need a win to keep their UFC career alive, and they’re going to stage an exciting fight as both are versatile and can battle on the mat as well as standing up. Don’t forget, this is a rematch from 2010 as Garcia was awarded a split-decision win at the finale of the “Ultimate Fighter 12”, even though the consensus is that Phan won. Garcia will quiet the critics on Saturday.

Betting Edge: Leonard Garcia

Demian Maia (14-3) vs. Jorge Santiago (23-9) – Middleweight

Maia will likely be the UFC betting favorite in this contest, and he showed much-improved striking in a loss against Mark Munoz, while Santiago was KO’d by Stann in his return to the UFC after an absence of almost five years. Santiago would do well to keep this fight standing up, even though he is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, as Maia may be the most skilled jiu-jitsu artist in the UFC (he is a third-degree black belt in BJJ). If this goes to the mat, Maia will roll to a victory. Santiago has never been submitted, but this could be the first time he has to tap, and doing it against Maia is nothing to be ashamed of.

Betting Edge: Demian Maia

Anthony Pettis (13-2) -285 vs. Jeremy Stephens (20-6) – Lightweight

Finally, Pettis is a -285 favorite against Stephens, who is listed at +225 despite having won four of his last five fights. Pettis lost in his UFC debut against Clay Guida, but he’ll always have a chance in president Dana White’s eyes because he took the fight, instead of waiting for the winner of Edgar-Maynard 3 (which was originally postponed due to injuries to both fighters, hence Pettis taking the Guida fight). This is a darkhorse candidate for “Fight of the Night”, but the edge goes to the sports betting favorite, Pettis.

Betting Edge: Anthony Pettis
