Online betting players who followed Pride should be excited for this light-heavyweight contest between a pair of legends from that promotion, as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Dan Henderson square off in a match that will likely put one of them in line for the next title fight. In what could be a “Fight of the Year” candidate, we’re taking the striking of “Shogun”.

What: UFC Betting
When: Saturday, November 19th, 9:00 PM ET
Where: HP Pavilion, San Jose, CA
Pick: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Why Bet On Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-5)

There were whispers that “Shogun” wasn’t 100% healthy heading into his title defense against Jon Jones in March, and whether he was or not, he was thoroughly dominated by the young light-heavyweight phenom. But we saw the Rua we’re used to seeing in his next match in August, a rematch against Forrest Griffin, who defeated Rua in his UFC debut back in September 2007. It ended 1:53 into the first round, and he brought back the explosiveness he was missing against Jones, and the spark that made “Shogun” a legend back in Pride when his soccer kicks may have been the most feared strike in MMA. You can sometimes forget that Rua is also a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as he has submitted only one opponent in his career, but he has that in his back pocket. Rua is a striker, that is what he does and when he is healthy, there may not be a scarier striker in the world than the black belt in Muay Thai.

“Shogun” has also shown heart in his career as he has managed to bounce back from some tough situations, such as knockout wins over Chuck Liddell and Mark Coleman (who had broken his arm almost three years earlier), he routed Lyoto Machida in their rematch after he was cheated out of the first clash, and then there was the win over Griffin, avenging a loss while coming back from the Jones loss. Even if he never wins a title again, “Shogun” will go down as a legend, but at 29 years old, he is not done yet….not even close.

Why Bet On Dan Henderson (28-8)

Henderson is beginning his third run in the UFC, where he won a middleweight tournament back at UFC 17 in May 1998, and then he lost to Quinton Jackson and Anderson Silva back in 2007 and 2008. However, “Hendo” was also a coach on the ninth season of the “Ultimate Fighter”, which ended with Henderson delivering a vicious knockout of fellow coach Michael Bisping at UFC 100 and he also defeated Rich Henderson. You also can’t count out his time in Pride, where he won a welterweight tournament as well as the middleweight title (which he lost to Jackson in a UFC/Pride unification match), and he was also the light-heavyweight champion in Strikeforce, but his last match was at heavyweight, where he defeated Feder Emelianenko. Henderson is one of the toughest men in the game in any weight class, and in 36 career MMA fights, he has never been knocked out. That is saying a lot when you look at his list of opponents.

His UFC betting odds depend a lot on his wrestling, which is world class, but Henderson also has very heavy hands and he isn’t afraid to stand and trade. He has submitted just two opponents, so that shouldn’t be a worry for Rua if they go to the ground. Henderson will wrestle you and utilize his ground-and-pound, or he’ll stand up and strike with you, but in this match, he would probably do well to use his wrestling.

How It Will Play Out

Rua opened as a -160 UFC betting favorite in this light-heavyweight affair, but he is now down to -125 in some places as the win over Fedor may have boosted Henderson’s profile. Rua isn’t going to run through Henderson as he did Griffin and as was mentioned, he’s going to be hard-pressed to win this via KO. Neither man is a submission specialist, so it’ll either go the distance or end with a knockout.

“Shogun” has gone the distance only three times in his career, but stamina shouldn’t be a problem and he’ll be able to hang with Henderson throughout the fight. Henderson’s goal will be to wrestle and get “Shogun” to the ground because he doesn’t want to strike with the Brazilian; that’s no knock on Henderson, that’s how good Rua’s striking is. We’re taking the younger Rua to edge Henderson in a very close fight that will go the distance, so wager on “Shogun” in your sports betting book.
