UFC 145 Undercard Betting – Picks For The Undercard In Atlanta

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 4/18/2012 3:31:07 PM

UFC 145 betting sharps know all about the main event at UFC 145 featuring former teammates Rashad Evans and champion Jon Jones in a clash of the 205-pounders, but what about the rest of the main card? Here are some picks to get you started before Saturday’s pay-per-view card.

What: UFC Betting
When: Saturday, April 21st, main card starts
Where: Philips Arena, Atlanta, GA

Rory MacDonald (12-1) vs. Che Mills (14-4, 1 NC) – Welterweight

MacDonald is one of many Canadians on this card as it was originally supposed to be held in Montreal, and he is a massive -475 favorite against England’s Mills, who is rated at +390. MacDonald is a fast-rising prospect who was derailed by injury and hasn’t fought since August, while Mills won the “Knockout of the Night” honors against Chris Cope in his UFC debut in November. This figures to be an explosive fight, and once MacDonald shakes a little rust off, he should dominate this match.

Betting Edge: Rory MacDonald -475

Brendan Schaub (8-2) vs. Ben Rothwell (31-8) – Heavyweight

Schaub is favored at -255 after he was stunned in Brazil by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in August, and to be honest this could have been the best thing for the “Hybrid”, who used to play football and one of the most athletic heavyweights we’ve seen, but he’s still learning the nuances of the fight game. Rothwell comes in at +215 and hasn’t fought since a brutal loss to Mark Hunt in September, but that was in Denver and the altitude affected both fighters. Rothwelll has much more experience, but Schaub should come back stronger than ever to take a decision victory.

Betting Edge: Brendan Schaub -255

Miguel Torres (40-4) vs. Michael McDonald (14-1) – Bantamweight

In a match that has “Fight of the Night” written all over it, Torres is a -120 UFC betting favorite, while McDonald is rated at +100 and in this 135-pound bout, you’re going to see a lot of activity from fighters who have a lot to prove. Torres was released from the UFC because of a comment he made about rape on a television show, but he did his time and was allowed back into the fold. McDonald has won fight bonuses in two of his three fights in the UFC, and there isn’t a lot of competition at 135 pounds, so a win could put you in the mix for a title shot, whether the champion is Dominick Cruz (current) or Urijah Faber, who will meet this July. This should be a high-octane affair, but the edge goes to Torres.

Betting Edge: Miguel Torres -120

Mark Hominick (20-10) vs. Eddie Yagin (15-5-1) – Featherweight

Hominick, another Canadian, is favored at -700 after he was knocked out in seven seconds by Chan-Sung Jung in December, and the Ontario native may not want to fight in Toronto anymore as he has lost his last two fights there. Yagin, who is rated at +500, lost his UFC debut against Junior Assuncao, but that seemed to be more of a blip than anything as it was a tough decision loss and Yagin may have been a little nervous in his first match in the octagon; ask Faber how much “octagon nerves” can shake you on the night of your first UFC fight. Both have a lot to lose in this match and Hominick may have more, but he seems to have lost his way and this is the upset UFC betting pick of the night.

Betting Edge: Eddie Yagin +500

Mark Bocek (10-4) vs. John Alessio (34-14) – Lightweight

In an all-Canadian matchup, Bocek (from Toronto) will likely be the favorite against Alessio (from Vancouver) when it comes up on the board because Alessio took the fight on short notice after Matt Wiman pulled out because of an injury. Alessio was actually 20 years old when he made his UFC debut in 2000, losing to welterweight champion Pat Miletich, and he also lost to Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves as well as current interim champion Carlos Condit when the two were in the WEC. Now at 32, Alessio is a 155-pounder going up against Bocek, one of the best jiu-jitsu artists to come out of the Great White North. If anything, it’s of note that Bocek’s losses have come against current lightweight champion Ben Henderson, former champ Frankie Edgar (who will meet Henderson in a rematch this summer), as well as Jim Miller and Mac Danzig. Alessio has plenty of experience, but he has never been able to get over that hump, while Bocek is in the same boat and the experience gets the edge here. Lean towards Alessio in your online betting picks.

Betting Edge: John Alessio
