UFC 157 Betting Predictions – A Quick Look At Matches Worth Watching On UFC 157 Under Card

Posted by Jack "The Hammer" Howard on 2/17/2013 7:29:45 PM

With the UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche event right around the corner, the anticipation is building for not just the main event, but also another solid undercard. While the scheduled bout between UFC Featherweight contender Chad Mendes and Manny Gamburyan was cancelled after the latter suffered a broken thumb and fractured elbow in training, the addition of Brendan Schaub and Lavar Johnson solidifies the under card with a pair of fights in particular to look forward to. Schaub and Johnson weren’t even scheduled to compete at UFC 157, now they are the biggest online sports betting reason to watch the under card.

At 35-years old, Johnson isn’t exactly a young star, but the power that he brings to the table makes him a very dangerous opponent for Schaub. Schaub is already coming off back-to-back first-round knockout losses to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Ben Rothwell, and it’s scary to think that Johnson is the strongest and most lethal of that group. Johnson is coming off of a first-round submission loss to Stefan Struve and has something to prove. He also has scored 15 of his 17 career online sportsbook wins via knockout, so it would be no surprise at all if he sits Schaub down and brings the crowd to its feet in the final tilt before the main card.

That final heavyweight bout isn’t the only reason to watch the under card however, as the lightweight bout between reigning TUF winner Michael Chiesa and Anton Kuivanen is also worth tuning in for. Chiesa is undefeated through eight fights in his career, with six of those clinched via submission, including the finale of the TUF 15 when he forced Al Iaquinta to tap just 2:47 in to their sports betting bout back in June. Kuivanen is also a very good technical fighter and had some success as the lightweight champion in the Cage promotion, and if he can build off his split decision win over Mitch Clarke at UFC 149, it would definitely put him on UFC President Dana White’s radar.

Although it is still in the process of generating more root interest, the lone featheweight bout on the FX card will also be worth tuning in for, as Dennis Bermudez goes for a third-straight win when he takes on Matt Grice. Bermudez earned Submission of the Night honors with his guillotine choke on Tommy Hayden that forced him to tap in the first round, and a third-straight win would push him even further up the ladder as he looks to build his resume. Grice followed up a first-round knockout loss to Ricardo Limas in his UFC featherweight debut by taking out Leonard Garcia, and he still feels as though he can be a title contender as well.

While the main card will obviously be the more highly anticipated draw with the women’s championship fight in particular getting a ton of attention, the preliminary card on FX will be worth tuning in for. Particularly, Johnson and Schaub have the power to put eachother down and bring the crowd to its feet, and it could be one of the more underrated fights of the night until after it is all said and done.
