Champions Weidman, Rousey Set To Defend Their Titles At UFC 175

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 6/30/2014 11:29:15 PM

The Ultimate Fighting Championships return to Las Vegas, Nevada and the Mandalay Bay Events Center for UFC 175. The UFC Middleweight title and UFC Women’s Bantamweight title will be on the line in the co-main events, but not until after Stefan Struve battles Matt Mitrione in a highly anticipated heavyweight bout.

UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida

Saturday July 5, 2014

Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada

Originally scheduled for UFC 173, the UFC Middleweight title fight between champion Chris Weidman and former light heavyweight champion Lyota Machida was pushed back when the former needed minor knee surgery. Weidman is back at 100-percent, and you can bet that Machida is prepared after having an extra couple of months to get ready.

UFC Middleweight Championship

Chris Weidman vs. Lyota Machida

Machida made the move to the middleweight division after a tough loss to Phil Davis, and after putting together consecutive wins, it seems like it was the right decision. Machida earned Knockout of the Night honors when he KO’d Mark Munoz with a vicious kick to the head, and then survived a Fight of the Night winner with a unanimous decision victory over Gegard Mousasi this past February. As impressive as those wins were, Weidman will be the toughest test to date for Machida. Weidman improved to 11-0 with back-to-back wins over Anderson Silva to solidify himself as champion and the undisputed No. 1 middleweight, and he will be relentless in his pursuit of a stoppage win.

Pick: Chris Weidman - 187

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship

Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis

As hard as the UFC has tried to build up the women’s brand with Rousey, the reality is that her dominance has ultimately worked against that plan. Rousey needed just over a minute to knock out Sara McMann at UFC 170, and it might not take much longer for her to deal with Davis after she barely scraped by Jessica Eye via split decision at UFC 170.

Pick: Ronda Rousey - 700

Heavyweight Bout

Stefan Struve vs. Matt Mitrione

Struve has missed more than a year after they discovered he had a heart condition, but just one day after he was cleared to return, this bout with Mitrione was announced. Struve has had plenty of time to prepare for this fight, and the chance to bounce back from the knockout loss he suffered against Mark Hunt back in March of 2013. Mitrione is coming off a first-round knockout win over Shawn Jordan in his last bout, but he has really struggled against top competition, and Struve will be ready to make a statement in this one.

Pick: Stefan Struve - 150

Middleweight Bout

Uriah Hall vs. Thiago Santos

Hall bounced back from consecutive losses to beat Chris Leben via TKO in his last fight, but he could be somewhat overrated as such a big favorite heading in to this bout. Santos wasted little time knocking out Ronny Markes just 53 seconds in to their UFC Fight Night bout this past March, and his aggression and power make him a great value play.

Pick: Thiago Santos + 300

Bantamweight Bout

Marcus Brimage vs. Russell Doane

Doane made a successful UFC debut with his second-round submission win over Leandro Issa this past January, and his versatility could make the difference once again in this bout. Brimage is coming off a first-round TKO loss to Conor McGregor that could temper his aggression, and allow Doane the opportunity he needs to end this bout.

Pick: Russell Doane + 110
