Silva Set For No. 1 Contender Fight In Main Event At UFC 183

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 1/22/2015 7:25:33 PM

It has been more than a year since UFC legend Anderson “The Spider” Silva last stepped in to the Octagon but after 13 months of preparation he is set to pick up from where he left off in the main event of a stacked card for the UFC 183 event. The former UFC Middleweight champion will clash with former Strikeforce Welterweight champion Nick Diaz in a middleweight bout and with a win he will earn a shot at the UFC title that he held for so long. Here is a quick breakdown of all of the main event fights for UFC 183.

Middleweight Bout

(33-6-0) Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz (26-9-1)

Silva has made a career out of toying with opponents before striking them down with scary knockouts but after back-to-back losses to Chris Weidman and more than a year off we could see a more focused fighter in his return. Diaz is already known for fighting on the edge and putting these two together should lead to an exciting main event. Silva looked outmatched by Weidman but after more than a year to prepare he should be ready to exploit Diaz’s weaknesses and stay within his limitations as a veteran fighter. Diaz might have the physical edge in terms of his relative youth but Silva has the intelligence, experience, preparation, and the edge in physical reach all on his side.

Pick: Anderson Silva -400

Welterweight Bout

(14-3-0) Tyron Woodley vs. Kelvin Gastelum (10-0-0)

The UFC Welterweight title picture has been clouded by the fact that Rory McDonald is still waiting for his shot while Hector Lombard also mathematically deserves a crack at the title but don’t rule out Gaatelum to push his name in to the mix as well if he can take down Woodley. Woodley is currently the No. 3 ranked fighter in the welterweight division and while he deserves that ranking he will be in tough against the undefeated Gastelum. Woodley will be his toughest opponent yet but the 23-year-old Gastelum is coming off an impressive submission win over Jake Ellenberger that earned him Performance of the Night honors and his meteoric rise up the ranks could very well continue as long as he doesn’t underestimate his next opponent.

Pick: Kevin Gastelum -140

Lightweight Bout

(24-9-0) Joe Lauzon vs. Al Iaquinta (10-3-1)

Iaquinta has quickly established himself among the best strikers in the UFC lightweight division and he gets a shot to take another step forward with a tough opponent in Lauzon. The latter is coming off back-to-back wins but historically he has struggled against top competition and if the projections on Iaquinta as a rising star in the business are correct then we could see another dominant performance as the 27-year-old looks to make it three straight TKO wins.

Pick: Al Iaquinta -170

Middleweight Bout

(24-4-0) Thales Leites vs. Tim Boetsch (18-7-0)

The first middleweight bout on the main card will feature the next chapter in one of the greatest comeback stories in UFC history as the former middleweight contender Leites looks to build on his run of seven straight wins dating back to his time in the Super Challenge five years ago. Leites flamed out in the UFC back in 2009 but after working his way back in to the promotion he has put together four straight wins including back-to-back KO’s. Next up is a fighter that has been streaky in his own right over the past couple of years in Boetsch, who has lost three of his last five fights. Boetsch should be able to provide a couple of interesting rounds but he will have a tough time avoiding a stoppage loss as Leites looks to build on his impressive comeback.

Pick: Thales Leites -400
