Pettis, dos Anjos Ready For Lightweight Bout At UFC 185

Posted by on 3/6/2015 7:18:04 PM

The Ultimate Fighting Championships will invade the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas this weekend for the UFC 185 event that will feature two title matches including a UFC Lightweight title match between champion Anthony Pettis and No. 1 contender Rafael dos Anjoes as well as a UFC Women’s Strawweight title clash between the champion Carla Esparza and top contender Joanna Jedrzejcyk. Beyond that the rest of the card is pretty impressive as well including some familiar names on the main card. Here is a quick look at the four most highly anticipated fights for UFC 185.

Lightweight Championship Bout

(18-2-0) Anthony Pettis vs. Raafael dos Anjos (23-7-0)

There is no doubt that Pettis is the more dynamic fighter of the two and even though dos Anjos has worked hard to get to this level and will throw everything he has at the champion for a shot at the title he seems at least on paper to be outmatched in most areas. The challenger has good enough technique to make this fight worth watching but look for Pettis to get the job done and keep his stoppage streak intact in the process as he takes aim at his fifth straight win via either knockout or submission.

Pick: Pettis -350

Women’s Strawweight Championship Bout

(10-2-0) Carla Esparza vs. Joanna Jedrzejcyk (8-0-0)

Any MMA fan that is tired of seeing UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey dominate her division will welcome the chance to see what should be a much tougher fight to predict between Esparza and Jedrzejcyk. The champion is an excellent wrestler with a strong grappling game but she isn’t nearly as strong standing up while Jedrzejcyk is an excellent striker with a strong takedown defense that will want to avoid going to the ground. Esparza will be in tough trying to bring Jedrzejcyk and it wouldn’t be a major shock to see the challenger stay perfect and win via knockout or decision as long as she can stay on her feet and control the fight with her striking.

Pick: Jedrzejcyk +145

Welterweight Bout

(16-3-0) Johny Hendricks vs. Matt Brown (19-12-0)

It will be very interesting to see what kind of shape Hendricks is in for this bout as his lack of endurance may have cost him his title belt when he faded in the later rounds of his UFC Welterweight title bout versus Robbie Lawler and ended up losing via split decision. Hendricks should be better off in a three-round bout with an opponent that isn’t nearly as good as him on the ground but he has to make sure he controls this tilt with his wrestling ability and doesn’t leave himself more vulnerable than he needs to by standing up and trying to go punch for punch with Brown.

Pick: Hendricks -270

Heavyweight Bout

(20-9-0) Roy Nelson vs. Alistair Overeem (10-4-0)

Two of the more well known names in the UFC heavyweight division will give fans plenty to cheer for as they attempt to throw bombs at one another in an effort to land a knockout punch and get the crowd to its feet. Overeem is the superior fighter in terms of his overall skill set but he might not be able to take as much punishment as Nelson at this point of his career and considering the value that is available with a fighter that packs a ton of power in his punches in Nelson it makes a lot of sense to bet the underdog for this heavyweight tilt.

Pick: Nelson +150
