Flyweight Champion Looks To Put On A Show, Retain Title At Saturday’s UFC 186 Event

Posted by on 4/21/2015 12:40:05 AM

UFC Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is still somewhat of an underrated fighter in regards to how the casual MMA fan regards him but it’s no secret within the promotion that he has emerged as one of their top pound-for-pound fighters. Johnson will defend his title again in the main event of this weekend’s UFC 186 event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as the feature fight on a card that is sure to give fans their moneys worth. Here is a quick look ahead to the main card for UFC 186.

Flyweight Championship Bout

(21-2-1) Demetrious Johnson vs. Kyoji Horiguchi (15-1-0)

Johnson is finally beginning to get the credit he deserves in the Octagon as he has strung together seven consecutive wins including three of the last four via either knockout or submission. Horiguchi is next in line to contend for the flyweight championship and while he’s proven he deserves the opportunity after debuting with four straight wins in the UFC he will be in tough against an experienced champion. Horiguchi is still just 24-years-old and while he has the potential to be a future star it is still Johnson’s time right now and it shouldn’t be a surprise when he ends this tilt via stoppage and extends his championship run with an eighth straight victory.

Pick: Johnson

Middleweight Bout

(25-7-0) Michael Bisping vs. CB Dolloway (15-6-0)

Bisping has lost two of his last three bouts including a submission defeat at the hands of Luke Rockhold last November but he is still a talented and versatile fighter with a ton of experience and it will be interesting to see how he fares against an excellent wrestler in Dolloway. Dolloway will undoubtedly have an edge if he is able to take this fight to the ground but it will be getting there that is the difficult part as Bisping uses his elite striking and takedown defense in an attempt to keep him at bay. Bisping might be nearing the end of his career but he is still competing at a high level and he matches up well versus Dolloway in a fight that he should be able to find a way to win.

Pick: Bisping

Light Heavyweight Bout

(22-7-0) Fabio Maldonado vs. Steve Bosse (9-1-0)

The highly anticipated arrival of Bosse will finally take place this weekend as he looks to make up for lost time in a fight against Maldonado. Bosse was expected to make his debut in The Ultimate Fighter but after being held back because of injuries he is finally ready to show what he can do. The former NHL enforcer will be a fan favorite as a Canadian and former hockey player and with the crowd urging him on there is every reason to expect plenty of fireworks as he looks to end this fight as quickly as possible.

Pick: Bosse

Catchweight Bout

(12-3-0) John Makdessi vs. Shane Campbell (9-2-0)

Campbell stepped up to replace the injured Abel Trujillo against Makdessi and while he should be a more than suitable alternative he is still in tough against a fighter that is desperate to bounce back from his first loss in two years. Makdessi had strung together three straight wins including a knockout victory over Renee Forte before losing to Alan Patrick via decision his last time out and the Halifax, Nova Scotia-native should be able to take advantage of the opportunity to bounce back in this tilt.

Pick: Makdessi

Flyweight Championship Bout

(20-9-0) Yves Jabouin vs. Thomas Almeida (18-0-0)

Almeida will compete in his highly anticipated second fight in the UFC where he looks to remain undefeated and push his perfect record to 19-0 with a win. There is no denying that Almeida’s run has been impressive including a decision win over Tim Gorman in his promotional debut and there is a very good chance he will find a way to get the job done against a fighter in Jabouin that has been stuck alternating between wins and losses over his last five bouts. If that trend continues for Jabouin then it will be Almeida that wins in the first tilt on the main card at UFC 186.

Pick: Almeida
