UFC Fight Night: Barnett vs. Nelson Main Card

Posted by on 9/3/2015 10:29:01 PM

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Saitama, Japan for the fourth time in its history with the UFC Fight Night: Barnett vs. Nelson card scheduled for September 27, 2015. The main card will be headlined by a pair of heavyweight veterans in Josh Barnett and Roy Nelson as well as a middleweight bout between Gegard Mousasi and Uriah Hall. Here is a look at the best bets on the board for the main card of the UFC Fight Night: Barnett vs. Nelson event.

Heavyweight Bout

(33-7-0) Josh Barnett vs. Roy Nelson (22-11-0)

The 37-year-old Barnett returns to the Octagon to take on another veteran heavyweight in the 39-year-old Nelson and even though he hasn’t competed in a professionally sanctioned event since October of 2013 he is still considered a heavy favorite in this matchup. Barnett needed only 1:56 to knock out Frank Mir at the UFC 164 event but he followed that up with a first-round knockout loss to Travis Browne at UFC 168 and hasn’t competed since. The biggest reason why Barnett is such a substantial favorite is the fact that Nelson has lost four of his last five bouts including consecutive defeats at the hands of Mark Hunt and Alistair Overeem. Nelson still has the power to catch Barnett with a knockout punch but we like Barnett to play it safe early on and wear Big Country down before going for the kill shot later on.

Pick: Barnett

Middleweight Bout

(37-5-2) Gegard Mousasi vs. Uriah Hall (11-5-0)

Hall stepped in to replace Roan Carneiro in this middleweight co-main event but he will be in tough against the veteran Mousasi. The Dreamcatcher is coming off consecutive wins over Dan Henderson and Costas Philippou and he can continue to climb the UFC middleweight rankings with another win as he currently sits sixth in the division. Hall is coming off an impressive TKO win over Oluwale Bamgbose but he isn’t a top-10 middleweight and it’s unlikely he will be able to take down Mousasi as the obvious underdog in this bout.

Pick: Mousasi

Flyweight Bout

(15-2-0) Kyoji Horiguchi vs. Chico Camus (14-6-0)

Horiguchi had won eight straight fights including four in the UFC before he lost to UFC Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson in his last bout but despite tumbling down the rankings for his weight class he should be able to bounce back in this bout. Camus has only one victory to show for his last four tilts and while he could make this an entertaining bout Horiguchi should be able to find a way to get back on track with a win as the home favorite in his native country.

Pick: Horiguchi

Bantamweight Bout

(20-9-2) Takeya Mizugaki vs. George Roop (15-11-1)

Mizugaki is another Japanese fighter that appears primed to get back on track in front of his home fans at this UFC Fight Night event with a favorable matchup versus Root. Mizugaki dropped to eighth in the UFC’s official rankings for the bantamweight division following consecutive losses to Dominick Cruz and Aljamain Sterling but Root has never proven himself to be a top-10 talent and there isn’t much reason to think he will suddenly beat Mizugaki in this bout.

Pick: Mizugaki

Welterweight Bout

(30-6-2) Keita Nakamura vs. Jingliang Li (10-3-0)

It will be the Chinese Jingliang against the Japanese Nakamura in the second bout on the main card with the latter coming off four straight wins in lesser promotions and looking tom make a successful UFC debut. Jingliang looked impressive in his knockout win over Dhiego Lima in May but from what we have seen from Nakamura he is a worthy opponent that has the potential to come out on top in his UFC debut.

Pick: Nakamura

Bantamweight Bout

(18-6-0) Norifumi Yamamoto vs. Matt Hobar (9-3-0)

The most difficult part about this matchup is that neither fighter has been able to accomplish much of anything of late with Yamamoto coming off four straight bouts without a win while Hobar has lost two of three fights since making his UFC debut. There will be some substantial pressure on Yamamoto to perform but he hasn’t shown enough to make it worth risking money betting on him to win so we will take Hobar as the better bet hoping that he can open the main card with a statement win and get his own career back on track.

Pick: Hobar
