Examining The Main Card For UFC Fight Night 72

Posted by on 7/16/2015 10:01:13 PM

It will be a tale of two veteran middleweight fighters looking to push their way back in to the UFC championship picture in the main event at the upcoming UFC Fight Night 72 event and while Michael Bisping and Thales Leites each have everything to gain and everything to lose the fireworks will start well before they enter the Octagon for the main event. Here is a look at the main card for the UFC Fight Night 72 event with a breakdown of the best bets to win every single fight.

Middleweight Bout

(26-7-0) Michael Bisping vs. Thales Leites (25-4-0)

Bisping has struggled with stringing together consecutive wins since he won four straight fights back in 2010 and 2011 as he has alternated wins and losses in each of his last eight bouts. Bisping will have to break that current trend in order to beat Leites following a unanimous decision win over CB Dollaway at UFC 186 but he will be in tough against a fighter that has really impressed since his return to the UFC with five straight wins. Leites knocked out both Trevor Smith and Francis Carmont before taking out Tim Boetsch with a submission win and considering both his recent form and the fact that he is such a complete fighter we will take him to win here and add another link to Bisping’s string of alternating between wins and losses.

Pick: Leites -115

Lightweight Bout

(17-8-0) Ross Pearson vs. Evan Dunham (15-6-0)

Pearson’s knockout win over Sam Stout is still fresh in our memories and another win in this bout could push him even closer to a shot at the UFC Lightweight championship. Dunham might have saved his career with a win over Rodrigo Damm last January but he is outmatched by Pearson in this tilt.

Pick: Pearson -210

Lightweight Bout

(13-1-0) Joseph Duffy vs. Ivan Jorge (26-4-0)

Duffy is coming off three straight wins including a first-round TKO win over Jake Lindsey in his UFC debut and he will have an excellent opportunity to extend his win streak against the veteran Brazilian in Jorge. It isn’t that Jorge hasn’t looked good but Duffy’s punching power is extremely dangerous and all it will take is one mistake on Jorge’s part to end this bout.

Pick: Duffy -200

Women’s Strawweight Bout

(9-1-0) Joanne Calderwood vs. Cortney Casey-Sanchez (4-1-0)

Calderwood was scheduled to take on Bec Rawlings at this event but after the latter was forced out due to injury it will be Casey-Sanchez making her UFC debut on short notice. Calderwood might not have been ready to challenge for the UFC Women’s Strawweight title when she first arrived but she should have no problem taking out Casey-Sanchez and moving one step closer to a title shot in this fight as the substantial favorite.

Pick: Calderwood -365

Welterweight Bout

(9-2-0) Leon Edwards vs. Pawel Pawlak (11-1-0)

Pawlak bounced back from his first-career loss with a decision over Sheldon Westcott but he will be in tough in this fight against Edwards where he is listed as a substantial underdog. Edwards is coming off an impressive knockout win over Seth Baczynski in just eight seconds and if he connects with that kind of punching power versus Pawlak then this bout will also be over in a hurry.

Pick: Edwards -265

Lightweight Bout

(17-5-0) Steven Ray vs. Leonard Mafra (12-2-0)

Ray is one of the rising stars in the UFC lightweight division and he will get another opportunity to prove his merit in front of his hometown fans in Glasgow, Scotland in this bout. Mafra is a decent fighter who looked good in his win over Cain Carrizosa but he will be overmatched in hostile territory for this fight to get the main card started.

Pick: Ray -200
