Henderson In Tough Versus Thatch In Main Event For UFC Fight Night This Saturday

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 2/10/2015 8:52:53 PM

Valentine’s Day 2015 will feature another free televised card as the UFC presents Fight Night: Henderson vs. Thatch from the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. The card will not feature a championship match but a couple of key matchups will have title implications including the main event welterweight bout between former UFC Lightweight champion Benson Henderson and Brandon Thatch. Here is a quick look at the six fights on the main card for UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Thatch.

Welterweight Bout

(21-5-0) Benson Henderson vs. Brandon Thatch (11-1-0)

A main event that was originally supposed to feature Thatch and Stephen Thompson was altered after the latter suffered a rib injury in training as Henderson stepped in and agreed to fight as a replacement. The 31-year-old Colorado Springs native is coming off consecutive losses to Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone and while the word desperate might be a stretch it is clear he needs to get back on track. Thatch has been very impressive with 10 straight wins including consecutive victories in the Octagon where he followed up Knockout of the Night honors in a win over Justin Edwards with a submission win over Paulo Thiago and while he has missed some time with various injuries he should be rested and ready to go. It seems less likely that Thatch will win this fight via stoppage but his odds look very good as the underdog against a former champion that could be on the down slope following an impressive run.

Pick: Brandon Thatch +115

Featherweight Bout

(11-3-0) Max Holloway vs. Cole Miller (21-8-0)

Holloway was absolutely dominant throughout 2014 stringing together four straight wins via stoppage including the latest and perhaps most impressive which was a first-round knockout win over Akira Corassani that earned him Performance of the Night honors. Miller is as tough as they come but this is a major step up in competition level for him and it’s hard to envision a scenario where he emerges victorious. Look for Holloway to control this bout from the outset and potentially end it before the final round via either knockout or submission.

Pick: Max Holloway -350

Welterweight Bout

(13-3-0) Neil Magny vs. Klichi Kunimoto (18-5-0)

One of the more lopsided matchups on the main card, Magny is the heavy favorite to come out on top in this welterweight bout. The 27-year-old has put together five straight wins in the UFC including a pair of knockout wins over Rodrigo de Lima and William Macario and while Kunimoto has put together seven straight wins of his own he has looked very average while securing the last three in the UFC including a split decision over Richard Walsh last September.

Pick: Neil Magny -450

Middleweight Bout

(8-0-0) Dan Kelly vs. Patrick Walsh (5-1-0)

The 37-year-old Kelly has won eight straight fights including a first-round submission win over Luke Zachrich in his UFC debut but he will be in very tough versus a talented and experienced fighter in Walsh. Both of these fighters are capable of ending this bout with one punch but we like Walsh to take it as three of his first five MMA wins have come via stoppage.

Pick: Patrick Walsh -175
