Lawler vs. Brown Card Features Plenty Of Upset Potential, Unpredictability

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 7/23/2014 10:39:42 PM

The next UFC Welterweight championship contender will be announced this Saturday at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, where Robbie Lawler is set to clash with Matt Brown for the right to fight for the title in the main event for the UFC on FOX 12 event. Lawler is listed as a -300 favorite to win the fight, but anyone that has watched Brown over the past two years should know how little that means. This card is absolutely stacked from top to bottom, and it will be interesting to see just how many upsets we see.

Brown has won seven-straight fights including each of the last five via TKO or KO, and he has received Fight of the Night or Knockout of the Night honors in each of his last three appearances. Now he has a chance to prove everyone wrong as a + 190 underdog, and everyone knows that he will come out throwing punches. Lawler is coming off an impressive TKO win over Jake Ellenberger, and his only loss over the last two years came against the champion Johnny Hendricks with the title on the line at UFC 171. There is a good chance that this fight will also end with a knockout, but if they do manage to go the distance, it will only be after plenty of major blows both ways.

While everyone is talking about the main event, the rest of the main card is stacked, including the highly anticipated fight between Anthony Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Johnson took the long route when he left the UFC to fight in Titan and the WSOF, but he returned with a win over Phil Davis, and is a substantial favorite heading in to this bout at -475. This fight against Nogueira may be perceived as a step back, but he cannot afford to underestimate a talented veteran opponent that is very capable of stalling his progress up the UFC light heavyweight ladder.

Another bout that MMA fans can’t wait to see is the featherweight bout between Clay Guida and Dennis Bermudez, two fighters that will throw down at a relentless pace until one of them eventually goes down. Both are tough and strong, and both go all out looking to end each bout via stoppage. Bermudez has improved dramatically over the past 18 months and deserves to be the favorite at -190, but Guida undoubtedly has the potential to upset as a +150 underdog.

Before all of that, Josh Thomson will throw down with Bobby Green as a -260 favorite to come out on top. Thomson is already 35-years old, but he has finally started to realize his potential, and this is an excellent test. Green is very dangerous in the clinch, and he should have a chip on his shoulder after getting no respect at a +200 underdog. All of this should lead to another exciting tilt that features plenty of action, as the main card for the UFC on FOX: Lawler vs. Brown shapes up as a excellent fight night with the potential for plenty of upsets and unpredictability.
