Gustafsson, Johnson Clash Will Determine No. 1 Contender For UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

Posted by Jack “The Hammer” Howard on 1/16/2015 9:11:54 PM

The Ultimate Fighting Championships is set to return to Stockholm, Sweden this coming Saturday for the UFC on FOX 14 event. This will be the fourth UFC event held in Sweden and the fans have to be looking forward to a chance to see hometown hero Alexander Gustafsson clash with Anthony Johnson in a main event bout that will determine the No. 1 contender for the UFC Light Heavyweight title. Here is a quick look at the main card for the UFC on FOX 14 event.

Light Heavyweight Bout

(16-2-1) Alexander Gustafsson vs. Anthony Johnson (18-4-0)

There were many that felt Gustafsson got robbed when he lost to Jon “Bones” Jones via unanimous decision in their UFC Light Heavyweight title fight back in September of 2013 and after nearly two years later he is finally on the verge of getting another shot at the championship belt. Gustafsson bounced back from the loss to Jones with Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night honors in a second round TKO win over Jimi Manuwa. Johnson has won eight straight fights including a first-round knockout win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira this past July and while he is a worthy opponent this is Gustafsson’s time to shine with a chance to secure a title shot in front of his home fans.

Pick: Alexander Gustafsson -240

Middleweight Bout

(30-12-0) Dan Henderson vs. Gegard Mousasi (35-5-0)

Mousasi is coming off a pair of submissions as he beat Mark Munoz back in May of 2014 before himself tapping out to Ronaldo Souza back in September. Now he gets a chance to earn a measure of redemptions and welcome back Henderson to his first UFC fight since losing to Daniel Cormier back in May. The 44-year old Henderson has lost four of his last five fights and while each of those defeats was against top competition it’s unlikely he has much left in the tank at this point in his MMA career. Henderson’s experience should help him hang around for a while but ultimately it will be Mousasi that finds his way back in to the win column.

Pick: Gegard Mousasi -300

Light Heavyweight Bout

(13-2-1) Phil Davis vs. Ryan Bader (18-4-0)

Davis bounced back from a unanimous decision loss to Johnson by beating Glover Teixeira at the UFC 179 event and if he can string together a couple of victories in a row he could become next in line for a chance at a title shot. Next up is a date with a fighter that has turned things around with three straight wins over the last two years in Bader. Bader has worked his way in to the title consideration picture but he isn’t ready just yet and Davis should be able to send him back down a notch with a convincing win.

Pick: Phil Davis -260

Featherweight Bout

(12-5-1) Akira Corassani vs. Sam Sicilia (13-5-0)

Corassani is coming off back-to-back knockout losses but the fact that he always seems to lay it all on the line with his aggressive and somewhat reckless style has opened the door for him to clash with Sicilia in the opening bout on the main card. Sicilia has lost two of his last three with both defeats coming via submission but don’t expect many submission attempts as both of these fighters come out throwing bombs in a fight that could go either way

Pick: Akira Corassani -135
