Breaking Down The Main Card For UFC On Fox: Machida vs. Rockhold

Posted by on 4/17/2015 10:16:53 PM

If you haven’t heard a lot about the UFC on Fox: Machida vs. Rockhold card it’s because the main event features two fighters that have made names for themselves with their skills inside the Octagon rather than outside of it. Lyota Machida and Luke Rockhold are former champions with UFC and Strikeforce respectively and both could potentially challenge for a UFC title but neither fighter is known for their trash talking which in some ways is a welcome aspect of this card. Here is a quick look at what to expect from the main card for the UFC on Fox: Machida vs. Rockhold.

Middleweight Bout

(22-5-0) Lyota Machida vs. Luke Rockhold (13-2-0)

The winner of this fight will have an excellent shot at earning a title fight as both have performed at an elite level over the past couple of years. Rockhold has strung together three straight wins via stoppage in the UFC including consecutive submission victories over Tim Boetsch and Michael Bisping in his last two bouts while the only blemish on Machida’s recent record is a loss to Chris Weidman that went down to decision at UFC 175 but is bookended by wins over Gegard Mousasi and CB Dollaway. Neither fighter has many weaknesses and they match up well against one another but Rockhold is younger and has looked more dominant of late so he gets the slight edge in a fight that could go the distance.

Pick: Rockhold

Middleweight Bout

(21-3-0) Ronaldo Souza vs. Chris Camozzi (20-9-0)

A late injury to Yoel Romero opened the door for Camozzi to make his UFC return versus Souza and get his shot at redemption but considering his resume there is no reason to think he isn’t outmatched again heading in to their second meeting. Camozzi lasted less than four minutes before submitting to Souza in his UFC debut at the UFC on FX event back in May of 2013 and his return will likely only lead to his fifth straight defeat in the promotion dating back to that initial lost versus Souza.

Pick: Souza

Featherweight Bout

(21-6-0) Cub Swanson vs. Max Holloway (12-3-0)

Two of the best strikers in the featherweight division will clash in what could be the most highly anticipated fight of the night and the most likely to end via knockout. Both fighters are quick on their feet and able to really push the pace of this bout with their pace and tempo and that should lead to some real fireworks. Swanson is the more experienced fighter but Holloway is extremely quick and powerful and he should have the slight edge in this match up with a very real chance he wins via KO.

Pick: Swanson

Women’s Strawweight Bout

(4-1-0) Felice Herrig vs. Paige VanZant (10-5-0)

Any hope for the women’s division to get a little more parity might have to wait as Herrig has never really established herself as an elite fighter while VanZant brings incredible pace and cardio to a fight she should be able to control if she picks her spot. Neither competitor has the type of elite skill set to really get after the other and try to force a stoppage but VanZant should have the edge thanks to her superior conditioning and her ability to dictate the pace as Herrig wears down throughout the bout.

Pick: VanZant
