Online betting players will be right there for the kick-off for the World Cup, and we start in Group A, where the runners-up from the 2006 event will have the pole position to advance to the second round, but they have to hold off a couple of scrappy teams, including the hosts.

Key Match

World Cup betting players should see this group decided when France plays Mexico on June 17th at 2:30 PM ET.  The winner should win the group, leaving the other team one more game to get into the next round.

France - World Cup Group A Betting
  • History: 13th World Cup appearance; second place in 2006
  • Best finish: Champions (1998)
  • World Cup Group A Betting Odds: +100

Why they can win: The French have the most talent in the group, although they’re bordering on aging up front, led by Theirry Henry and Nicolas Anelka.  Karim Benzema is being counted on for a better period with France than he has had in his first season at Real Madrid, while Andre-Pierre Gignac looks to pick up from his solid qualifying campaign.

Why they can’t win: There was the controversial handball against Ireland that allowed France to get this far, then there was word that Raymond Domenech will be sacked after the World Cup is over.  There is also the prostitution controversy surrounding the national team.  If the French fall on their faces, it’ll be due to off-field questions

Mexico - World Cup Group A Betting
  • History: 14th World Cup appearance; second round in 2006
  • Best finish: Quarterfinals (1970, 1986)
  • World Cup Group A Betting Odds: +320

Why they can win: Mexico earned a fortunate draw, and it helps that they have plenty of experience on the roster.  There are plenty of players that can score, led by Carlos Vela, so you can’t key on one player for the Mexicans.  The defense has a very able leader in Rafa Marquez, who will retire from the Mexican side when the World Cup is over.

Why they can’t win: The Mexicans play a good team game, but there will be some question as to who can lift the team in a single moment with a big play or goal.  There is also a concern in goal, where Guillermo Ochoa is making his first appearance as a No.1 goalkeeper on an international level.

Uruguay - World Cup Group A Betting
  • History: 11th appearance; didn’t qualify in 2006
  • Best finish: Champions (1930, 1950)
  • World Cup Group A Betting Odds: +350

Why they can win: They have an intensely clinical striker in Diego Forlan, who has played at the top level in Europe for a while now.  Luis Suarez could be chased by big clubs if he has a good World Cup, while Sebastian Abreu is looking to make noise in what should be his final World Cup.  These strikers will have to be on point as Cristian Rodriguez has been suspended for fighting in a qualifying match against Argentina.

Why they can’t win: Uruguay is a bit young at the back, which could hurt their chances for an upset in your sportsbook.  Diego Godin will be counted on to hold the defense together but at 24 years old, that may still be too young to bet on Uruguay.

South Africa - World Cup Group A Betting
  • History: 3rd appearance; didn’t qualify in 2006
  • Best finish: First round (1998, 2002)
  • World Cup Group A Betting Odds: +600

Why they can win: The crowd will have to be a big factor if the South Africans want to avoid being the first host nation to drop out in the first round.  Steven Pienaar supplies the ball from midfield, but he may even have a target at home as Benni McCarthy will be on the team despite injury problems this season.

Why they can’t win: They’re scrappy and won’t lie down, but the South Africans don’t have the talent to compete with France and Mexico.  Getting a win would be absolutely massive, but placing a bet on South Africa would be a risk.

World Cup Group A Betting Prediction & Outlook

We’re actually going with Mexico to win the group, with France to finish second ahead of South Africa and Uruguay.  France has the most talent, but the Mexicans are the most consistent, which is why they should be your sports betting pick in this group.
