The Netherlands will be the online betting favorites to come out on top in Group E, but don’t be surprised if they wind up getting pushed by Cameroon and Denmark, especially by the team from Africa with one of the most clinical strikers in the tournament.

Key Match

Cameroon against Denmark on June 19th at 2:30 PM ET should decide the second-place team in the group, and Cameroon will be looking for maximum points as they’ll close their first round against the Netherlands.

The Netherlands - World Cup Group E Betting
  • History: 9th appearance; Second round in 2006
  • Best finish: Second place (1974, 1978)
  • World Cup Group E Betting Odds: -150

Why they can win: Perhaps no team has been a bigger disappointment on the global soccer stage than the Dutch, but when it comes to attacking talent, you’ll see why many have them as a World Cup betting darkhorse to go all the way. Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben will square off in the Champions League final in Madrid on opposite sides, but together, they form a devastating attacking duo from midfield. The Dutch were also happy to see Robin van Persie return from injury to Arsenal late in the season.

Why they can’t win: After years of having Edwin van der Sar in goal, the Orange Crush now have Maarten Stekelenburg as the No.1 guy, and while he played well in qualifying, the World Cup itself is a completely different ball game. The defense is going to have to play well in front of him, and the Dutch back four has been known to break in the past.

Denmark - World Cup Group E Betting
  • History: 4th appearance; didn’t qualify in 2006
  • Best finish: Quarterfinals (1998)
  • World Cup Group E Betting Odds: +400

Why they can win: The Danes will be filled with confidence after beating Portugal and Sweden in their qualifying group, and they’re a very balanced and veteran team that doesn’t try to be fancy. Jon Dahl Tomasson will probably be playing his last World Cup, and he’ll be looking to pass the torch up front to Soren Larsen and Nicklas Bendtner, who combined for eight of Denmark’s 16 goals in qualifying.

Why they can’t win: The Danes haven’t played in a major tournament since Euro 2004, so nerves could be a factor, and they may be a bit overeager to produce for their country. This is where the veteran leadership of players like Tomasson will come into play.

Cameroon - World Cup Group E Betting
  • History: 6th appearance; didn’t qualify in 2006
  • Best finish: Quarterfinals (1990)
  • World Cup Group E Betting Odds: +425

Why they can win: In Samuel E’to, Cameroon has one of the best strikers in the world and one who will put away most of the chances that fall to him. Cameroon won all seven of their matches in which E’to, who will also take part in the Champions League final, managed to score a goal. Achille Emana and Jean Makoun will be counted on to support E’to, but the Inter Milan striker is the star of the show.

Why they can’t win: Cameroon’s sportsbook odds will be in trouble if their defense can’t keep up with the opposing forwards. They looked strong in qualifying, but they’ll take a huge step up in quality against the likes of the Netherlands. Also, Cameroon is a bit too dependent on E’to.

Japan - World Cup Group E Betting
  • History: 4th appearance; first round in 2006
  • Best finish: Second round (2002)
  • World Cup Group E Betting Odds: +1250

Why they can win: the Japanese have a couple of players in Shunsuke Nakamura and Keisuke Honda who can turn the game on its head with a piece of skill, and Nakamura will be especially important as he heads into the twilight of his career. Nakamura’s dead-ball ability could give the Japanese a few chances to score, as they bulged the net just twice in 2006 in Germany.

Why they can’t win: A lack of goals and quality is the major reason that Japan won’t go through, and it won’t be from a lack of effort because Japan won’t stop coming at you for 90 minutes. A win in this group will be a huge accomplishment.

World Cup Group E Betting Prediction & Outlook

It’s hard to see anyone beating the Netherlands in Group E, although their match with Cameroon to wrap up the group could be the most exciting of the entire group stage. We’re going with Cameroon to hold off Denmark for the second spot in the next round, and we’re banking on E’to to fire his country to a major sports betting win over the Danes.

Pick: The Netherlands -150
