world cup golden boot award

Online betting props for the World Cup include betting on the Golden Boot, which is given to the leading goal-scorer in the biggest tournament in the world.  Who will take the award at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa?  Here are the top five favorites to bulge the back of the net.

David Villa (+700)

The Spanish striker just made a big-money move from Valencia to Barcelona after 28 goals this season, and he won the Golden Boot when Spain won the European Championships in 2008. Villa forms a deadly forward duo with Fernando Torres, but Villa may be counted on more heavily as Torres, who is listed at +1000, missed the later part of the season with a knee injury and is just getting back into shape now.

Lionel Messi (+900)

The Argentinean wonderkid is still only 22 years old, yet he’s the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year and is coming off a season most can only dream of: he notched 47 goals in all competitions, and his 34 goals for Barcelona in La Liga was the best in the Spanish league. The problem is, Messi has never really translated that form to Argentina, where he is labeled the heir to the legend of manager Diego Maradona, who captained the team to the World Cup in 1986. Maradona has been criticized for not utilizing Messi right, but if he nails that, Argentina is a very good pick to win the World Cup.

Wayne Rooney (+900)

As Rooney goes, so goes England’s World Cup betting chances. Rooney scored 34 goals in all competitions for Manchester United, and he was named the Player of the Year in the Premiership by the players and the fans. Unlike Maradona, England manager Fabio Capello has structured the team around his star striker, and he’ll be counting on support from Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in midfield. He can score with either foot, and Rooney even added an aerial aspect to his game as he went on a run of seven straight goals with his head this season.

Luis Fabiano (+1000)

This version of the Samba Kings isn’t the out-and-out attacking force that they usually are, but remember, they’re still Brazil, the five-time World Cup champions who are the only team to play in every single World Cup. Fabiano isn’t a fussy striker, and he’ll take goals however he can get them, which former Brazilian strikers like Ronaldo (who won the 2006 Golden Boot) preferred to turn on the style. Fabiano scored 21 goals for Sevilla this season, and he’ll look to carry over that form to the Brazilian team.

Cristiano Ronaldo (+1200)

As we said before, Torres would probably be on this list if not for his knee injury, but his replacement here needs no introduction. Ronaldo’s move from Manchester United to Real Madrid was the most expensive transfer in European soccer history, he’s now the highest-paid footballer in the world, and after winning the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2008, he finished second in 2009 behind Messi. After a slow start to his Madrid career due to an injury, Ronaldo scored 33 goals in all competitions and put on a dazzling display of pace and skill. Now the captain of Portugal, Ronaldo didn’t score during qualifying but he was injured for some of that. Now, he’s back, 100% healthy, and with Nani going down to injury, he’ll have to carry an even bigger load. But Ronaldo may be the toughest player in the world to stop one-on-one, and he’ll be the key to Portugal’s sports betting chances
