round of 16 betting

Online betting players watching the World Cup will know that the serious business starts in the second round, otherwise known as the “Round of 16”. Chances are, the best of the best have made it past the group stages into the second round, and the real fun will begin.

The current format for the round of 16 began at France 1998, when it was decided that the second round would include the top two teams from each four-team group. The group winners are separated from the runners-up, and then the draw is set between first-place teams and second-place teams. For example:

Group A – Mexico, South Africa, France, Uruguay
Group B – South Korea, Argentina, Nigeria, Greece

Mexico, the first-place team in Group A, would take on Argentina, the second-place team in Group B. Likewise, Group B winner South Korea would face Group A runner-up South Africa in the round of 16. This is a nice reward for a team if they manage to win their group, but sometimes it doesn’t work out. Switzerland won their group at Germany 2006, which earned them a date with the Ukraine, who finished second to Spain in their group. The Ukraine went on the next round via penalty kicks, so it’s not a certainty that winning your group will earn you a lesser opponent.

This is how the round of 16 looked at Germany 2006:

Group A – Germany, Ecuador
Group B – England, Sweden
Group C – Argentina, Netherlands
Group D – Portugal, Mexico
Group E – Italy, Ghana
Group F – Brazil, Australia
Group G – Switzerland, France
Group H – Spain, The Ukraine

Only two second-place teams (France, the Ukraine) managed to beat group winners in the round of 16 at Germany 2006, so like we said, it’s always a good thing to win your group to get an edge.

A few more things to know about the round of 16, if you’re a World Cup betting player, is that the host country has never failed to make it to the second round, which means South Africa has a bit of an advantage, and they did well to draw with Mexico in their opening match. A couple of teams didn’t take their chance to earn maximum points from the first game (England, Serbia, Mexico), and some punched well above their weight (South Africa, Japan).

Here’s who should make to the round of 16 betting wise, even though we’re not completely through the first round yet:

Group A – Mexico, Uruguay
Group B – Argentina, South Korea
Group C – England, USA
Group D – Germany, Ghana
Group E – Netherlands, Japan
Group F – Paraguay, Italy
Group G – Brazil, Portugal
Group H – Spain, Chile

This will look to set up a couple of very important matches in the round of 16. South American rivals Argentina and Uruguay could face each other, as well as Team USA and Germany. The Netherlands and Italy could stage a massive showdown in the next round, but the final two groups may have the best of the bunch. Another pair of South American rivals, Brazil and Chile, could end up facing each other, while Portugal and Spain could meet in a match that would be classified as being much bigger than the game, given the countries’ proximity to each other and their history. Sports betting players should be in for some thrilling matches in the round of 16.
