Sports betting players that follow soccer know that rivalries are a massive part of the culture in England, and “derby day” is arguably the most important part of the season. On Sunday, Tottenham has a chance to deal a telling blow to their North London neighbors at Arsenal, who are too nicked up at the back.

What: Soccer Betting
When: Sunday, 8:30 AM ET
Where: Emirates Stadium, London, England
Pick: Tottenham Hotspurs

Why Bet On Tottenham Hotspur (16 wins, 5 draws, 4 losses, 53 points, 3rd place in EPL)

Spurs’ last Premier League contest was a 5-0 slaughter of Newcastle at White Hart Lane on February 11th, and former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor had a hand in all markers of the five-star victory as he assisted on a pair from Louis Saha, singles from Niko Kranjcar and Benoit Assou-Ekotto and he provided the cherry on top with the final goal just past the hour. It was a spectacular performance by Spurs, but then they looked flat in a 0-0 draw at League One Stevenage in the fifth-round of the FA Cup. Even with Saha, Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale in the lineup, among others, Tottenham couldn’t find the back of the net and will now have a replay at White Hart Lane in three weeks. Manager Harry Redknapp won’t be impressed with having an extra game to deal with, although they have a nice 10-point cushion over their biggest rivals and now, their eyes are on getting back to the Champions League.

But if and when they return, will Redknapp be leading the squad? He has the consensus favorite to take the England job vacated in the Fabio Capello/John Terry fiasco, and the Tottenham faithful chanted his name throughout the Newcastle match to show their support, so Spurs have that hanging over the club. They also have a number of players who are doubtful for the trip to the Emirates, such as Assou-Ekotto (groin), Luka Modric (illness), Rafael Van Der Vaart, and the duo of William Gallas (leg) and Adebayor (knee), a pair of former Gunners that would love to stick it to their former club.

Why Bet On Arsenal Gunners (13 wins, 4 draws, 8 losses, 43 points, 4th place in EPL)

However, soccer betting players watched Arsenal go through a brutal two-game stretch as they were routed 4-0 away at AC Milan in the first leg of their Champions League tie, and manager Arsene Wenger has all but waved the white flag for the return match at the Emirates on March 6th. But that loss had nothing on a 2-0 loss at Sunderland to crash out of the FA Cup, and unless the Gunners have a couple miracles left, they won’t win a trophy for the seventh straight year. Now, Wenger’s motivation is holding onto fourth place in the Premiership so they can have a chance to qualify for the Champions League, which makes Arsenal a more attractive lure for players, but the Gunners are also notoriously thrifty and missed out on a big chance to bolster their club during the transfer period. The decision not to buy Gary Cahill from Bolton, and watching the defender go to another city rival, Chelsea, may turn out to be a fatal mistake for Arsenal as the Blues are one point behind the Gunners; they’re just one of five teams within a 10-point radius of Arsenal.

The Cahill injury is crucial as the Gunners have a host of defenders who have knocks; Sebastian Squillaci (groin), Francis Coquelin (hamstring), Laurent Koscielny (knee) and Per Mertesacker (ankle) are all either out or doubtful, while Jack Wilshere (ankle) is still a couple weeks away to help out with his all-action midfield skills. This weekend’s showdown with Tottenham could be the make-or-break point for the Gunners, who can’t afford to get run off their own pitch by their biggest rivals. It could cause the chorus of fans calling for Wenger’s job to swell, which is strange to consider after all that Wenger has done for the club.

How It Will Play Out

The North London derby has been even over the last 10 matches, with both sides winning three and drawing four, while Arsenal holds a slight 21-18 edge in goals scored. The Gunners have won two and drawn one of their last four at the Emirates with Spurs, who are 6-3-3 away from White Hart Lane, while Arsenal is 8-2-2 at home.

Tottenham won the first meeting by a score of 2-1 on October 2nd at home as Kyle Walked hit a 25-yard bullet to break a 1-1 draw, but this match won’t be as close as Arsenal has too many defensive injuries to get any sense of continuity, and if Tottenham scores an early goal, the floodgates could open.
