Sports betting players watching Manchester United this season haven’t really seen them play at their best, but they’ve lost just one match in all competitions this season, using a solid mix of skill, experience, and a little bit of luck. This doesn’t bode well for Marseille ahead of their knockout-stage meeting with the English giants, and United is just too deep and strong for the French team to handle.

  • What: Soccer Betting
  • When: February 23rd, 2:45 PM ET (at Marseille); March 15th, 3:45 PM ET (at Man United)
  • Where: Stade Velodrome (at Marseille); Old Trafford (at Man United)
  • Pick: Man United

What’s On The Line

Marseille is in the knockout stage for the first time since they won the competition in 1993, finishing second to Chelsea in their group, and they’re currently six points out of first place in the Ligue 1 standings. United has yet to lose a match in the English Premier League, FA Cup or the Champions League, and they’re aiming for win No.4, which would be their first since 2008. These two haven’t met in Europe since 2000, when United won both matches by an aggregate score of 3-1.

Offensive Matchups: Marseille Man United Betting

Loic Remy and Lucho Gonzalez are tied for the lead in goals scored for Marseille, who are a goals-by-committee type of team in that there are no stars. They’ve scored 29 goals in their first 20 Ligue 1 matches, and while they scored seven goals against MSK Zilina in the group stage, you have to take that with a grain of salt. Andre-Pierre Gignac and Brandao have stepped in European action, and Marseille will need all hands on deck to pull off an upset in this tie. Also, watch out for Benoit Cheyrou, their playmaking midfielder.

Wayne Rooney, for many reasons, hasn’t been anywhere near his best this season, while Dimitar Berbatov can look spectacular in one match, and disappear in the next. Javier “Chicarito” Hernandez has been excellent off the bench for United, but Nani has probably been their best offensive player. Nani looks very similar to another Portuguese player who got off to a slow start at United, Cristiano Ronaldo, and while Nani may never reach that level, he is a handful on his best day, and he’s improved his shooting. Ji-Sung Park has a knack of scoring in big games, while veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes (when healthy) are still worthy of a place.

Defensive Matchups: Marseille Man United Betting

Marseille kept a clean sheet in their last four Champions League matches, including a 1-0 blanking of Chelsea at home, and they’re second in Ligue 1 in goals allowed, giving up just eight at the Stade Velodrome. Keeper Steve Mandanda has been very good in goal, while the defense is marshaled by Gabriel Heinze, who played for United from 2004 to 2007 and was a favorite at Old Trafford. Taye Taiwo has also been very good for the OM defense, while Eduardo Cisse sits in front of the defense. The right-back position has been a problem for Marseille this season. United is a different team when Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are both healthy, as proven by their 0-0 draw at Tottenham last weekend. When they’re 100%, they’re the best defensive duo in England, and one of the top three in Europe. That makes things much easier for keeper Edwin van der Sar, who doesn’t look like a 40-year-old, but he may retire at season’s end. Patrice Evra and Rafael have been up and down on the wings, but Rafael has to control his temper. Darren Fletcher plays the role of the midfield destroyer, but he doesn’t do much else (except score big goals at random times).

Notable Injuries: Marseille Man United Betting

Neither team has any major injury worries ahead of this two-legged tie.

Outlook And Pick: Marseille Man United Betting

Soccer betting odds will definitely favor Man United in this tie, and they haven’t faced a French side in Europe since 2008, which ended a four-year run of playing French teams. Marseille definitely stands a chance at home, as they put together a physically brilliant performance to beat Chelsea at the Stade Velodrome, although that match held some extra meaning as Chelsea’s Didier Drogba used to play at OM. Having Heinze in the side will help as he knows some of the players and the Manchester United philosophy, and they’re going to have to get a decent lead at home before they head to Old Trafford. The problem is, United is very good on the road, powered by the defensive duo of Vidic and Ferdinand, and they usually nick a goal on the counter-attack. At Old Trafford, United will set out to attack, and eventually they’ll break OM down. It won’t be an easy tie, but you should bet on Manchester United to come away with the victory in your online betting picks.

Pick: Man United
