Online betting players watched a contentious first leg to the Champions League semifinal between Real Madrid and Barcelona in which red cards were brandished on both sides, and there was plenty of diving, rash tackles and a manager was sent to the stands. The two will meet for the fourth time in less than a month in Barcelona on Tuesday, and barring a massive upset, look for the home side to progress to the final for the third time in six years.

  • Where: Camp Nou, Barcelona, Spain
  • Pick: Barcelona

Why Bet On Real Madrid

Madrid has nothing to lose in this match, having lost 2-0 in the first leg at home in one of the wildest games we’ve seen in a long time, although it was for all the reasons. Pepe was given a straight red card after an hour for a studs-up challenge on Dani Alves, but later, replays showed that he actually didn’t make contact with Alves. Manager Jose Mourinho was them sent off for protesting, but maybe everything that happened in the first leg will liberate them for this game, because honestly, Mourinho got his tactics wrong, which is rare for the “Special One”. He played far too defensively at home, choosing instead to absorb pressure and playing physically with Barca. For being at home in the Bernabeu, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo in the side, Madrid showed no attacking nous whatsoever and now they’ll have to because they’re chasing the game. It’s not like Madrid doesn’t have players who can threaten Barca’s defense; besides Ronaldo, the likes of Kaka, Angel Di Maria, Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain, and Mesut Ozil, among others, can be drafted into the team. Madrid should also be motivated to put up a better fight than they did in their first trip to the Camp Nou this season: a 5-0 capitulation in November in which they were outclassed from sideline to sideline.

Or, it could go the other way and in a respect, this match is going to be more about their mental spirit than their physical abilities, because we know Madrid can play football. But Barca has a major psychological edge over Madrid, and “Los Blancos” desperately needs to avoid getting run out of the Camp Nou like they were in the first match. They’re coming off a loss in La Liga, a 3-2 defeat at Real Zaragoza, but that shouldn’t matter as Madrid weren’t going to catch Barca in the league anyway, and third-place Valencia isn’t going to catch them, either.

Why Bet On Barcelona

Barca is also coming off a loss in La Liga as they fell 2-1 at Real Sociedad, but since Madrid lost as well, they’re still atop the league. If you look at the actual football aspect of their win over Madrid last week, it’s easy to see why they won as they held the ball for 77% of the match, which is their MO: Barca passes you to death and eventually, they find a way through. Having the best player in the world in Lionel Messi always helps, and he notched both goals in the first leg, but the second was a thing of beauty as he began a move with Sergio Busquets, took a return pass and went through four Madrid defenders to score a brilliant goal, and he doesn’t need much room. There is no shortage of quality in the Barca side and they’re very stubborn that you acclimate yourself to their way of football, which is why superstars like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Theirry Henry couldn’t fit in at the Camp Nou. They also help overcome a sometimes suspect defense with their ability to play keepaway with their opposition because the other team can’t press their back four, which has been hurt by an injury-filled season to captain Carlos Puyol, if they don’t have the ball.

We understand why Barca are the soccer betting favorites in this match, and we understand that they’re probably the best team on the planet, led by the best player in the world in Lionel Messi, and their style is some breathtaking stuff to watch. But their willingness to go down easily is a black mark on their team, and the way they crowd around the official to ask for cards is unnecessary. Busquets is one of the worst for this, and Pedro was also guilty of it in the first leg. Messi is the one who actually takes the most physical punishment of any Barca player, but he plays the game in honesty and it takes a bulldozer to get him to go down. His teammates would do well to follow his lead.

How The Game Will Play Out

Barca is a -160 soccer betting favorite to seal the deal at home, while Madrid comes in at +380, and a draw is rated at +270. Madrid hasn’t won at the Camp Nou since a 1-0 victory in December 2007, and of course, there was that 5-0 loss at Barca in November. After losing their first league match of the season at home, Barca hasn’t lost at the Nou Camp in La Liga, and that has extended to the Champions League as well. Madrid will be without Mourinho, who will be in the stands against after his red card, but this could be the best thing for Madrid as all of the attention leading up to the match surrounds him.

It’ll be interesting to see what type of lineup he fields, and that will let you know if Madrid will try to chase the game, or if they’ll be happy to avoid getting thrashed. We think it’ll be the latter, and while it won’t be a rout by any means, take Barcelona to get the win in your sports betting book.
